Seven years ago, when two representatives from the Provo School District approached local businessman Brent Brown soliciting a donation for the district, they had no idea they had knocked on the door of the man who would give them significantly more than they had asked for.
“I remember sitting at my desk thinking, ‘Well, let’s see now. I could either give them a donation or I could help them put something together so they could really get something,” Brent says.
Brent suggested organizing a charitable event to raise money, and because it was a few months before Easter when he began brainstorming, he proposed auctioning off Easter baskets.
“That first one nearly seven years ago was pretty darn humble, but we were able to raise about $23,000,” Brent says. “Compared to the $2,000 they would have wanted me to donate when they came to my office, I thought, ‘Well, we really accomplished something.’ For the last three years it has raised more than $100,000 each year.”
Between Brent’s contacts, and contacts of Kim Brown of Kim Brown & Associates, the two were able to procure donations from a variety of local businesses and friends.
The Seventh Annual Brent Brown Easter Basket Auction, which is free and open to the public, will be Tuesday, March 30 at 6:30 p.m. at the Provo City Library. Anyone interested in donating should contact Cathy Bledsoe at (801) 374-4802 or Greg Hudnall at (801) 374-4814 for more information.
