Dr. Robert McKeen is helping people restore their lives to a state of health. He’s been doing bariatric surgeries since 2001, assisting the morbidly obese in getting on track to a healthy lifestyle.
“The idea is that we help patients who are between 80 and 100 pounds overweight and are between the ages of 18 and 55,” Dr. McKeen says. “It offers them relief from the illnesses associated with obesity, like high blood pressure, diabetes and heart disease.”
The procedure, which places a band around the upper part of the stomach, creates a small pouch so patients can eat smaller amounts of food and still feel satisfied. That way, they can lose weight over a one- to two-year period naturally.
“There’s no extensive cutting of the tissue,” Dr. McKeen says. “It’s much safer than a gastric bypass procedure in terms of early concerns and risks.”
The lap band is also adjustable and reversible. Dr. McKeen was the first surgeon to do lap-band procedures in Utah. He’s completed more than 1,000 procedures with a zero mortality rate. His partner, Dr. Randy Hansen, and the excellent staff at Riverwoods Surgery Center help patients feel comfortable and cared for. The state-of-the-art facility is filled with up-to-date equipment, from waiting room to post-op recovery.
Dr. McKeen sets the tone for an office culture of hospitality. Patients are treated like family by his attentive staff.
Infertility is also a common result of obesity. Dr. McKeen says one of the most rewarding parts of his job is receiving birth announcements of some of his former patients.
“Lap-band procedures give people tools they didn’t have before,” he says. “Once we get to the point where people can eat small portions, we have weight loss success, but also life-long success.”
