Nationally, spring fashion is a mixed bag this year, according to Elle Magazine. New York runways showed everything from bold, black-and-white graphic prints to icy pastels, from skimpy crop tops to long, pleated skirts. Utah County has its own timing when it comes to couture, so we asked several boutique owners for a local fashion forecast. Here’s what they said about what you’ll be wearing this spring.

1. Flower power

“Daisy print is big this year,” said Sid Taylor, owner of Our Little Store in American Fork. Look for soft, feminine floral patterns on everything from jackets to dresses and skirts. It’s an easy, wearable trend that looks good on everyone and complements the season.

2. No-more neon

Say goodbye to jarring ’80s hot pink and embrace a softer palette of pastel colors. Hues such as a lilac, apricot and even sky blue are in abundance this spring, said Shelby Russell, owner of Soel Boutique in the Shops at Riverwoods in Provo. Taylor of Our Little Store added that she expects mint and pink to also be strong sellers. It’s a trend that matches up with the soft hues seen on New York runways.

3. Over-the-moon for overalls

For reals — overalls (also called jumpsuits) are big both nationally and locally. Several boutique owners said they are stocking overalls this year, but don’t think of the heavy, unflattering silhouettes of yesteryear. “The traditional overall has been revamped to be sexy and stylish using different fabrics and fun prints,” said Alisha Merrill, owner of Bella Ella, a clothing store with seven locations in Utah and Salt Lake counties.

Skirts are all the rage this spring, said Alisha Merrill, owner of the Bella Ella boutiques.

4. Letting loose

Flowy, looser-fitting tops are popular this year, and that’s a good thing. “The silhouettes on the top are still loose and forgiving, which I like: loose and casual,” said Taylor. And look for sheer or silky fabrics on structured pieces, such as chiffon cardigans. These types of tops pair nicely with jeans, said Taylor.

5. Denim lightens up

Acid-washed denim has been replaced with a lighter wash. White denim is always a big seller in the springtime, and forgiving, dark denim appeals to moms on the run. But for a fashion-forward look, go for “worn out or torn up jeans, a really, rugged, loose, torn-up look, and a lot of denim on denim,” said Russell.

6. Skirting the issue

“It’s all about skirts and dresses for 2014,” said Merrill of Bella Ella. “The styles are a blast from the past, featuring pleated skirts as well as the flirty, girlie look of a gathered waistband,” she said. In addition to figure-flattering, high-waisted skirts, you’ll also see maxi skirts in solid colors and floral patterns.

7. Adorable accessories

You can put your best foot forward with booties, pointed-toe flats and wedge sandals, say boutique owners. And gold jewelry still vastly outsells silver, said Taylor. Although “statement” necklaces are still available in abundance, jewelry is a bit more toned-down overall this spring. “Jewelry designs radiate a softer appearance than last year,” said Merrill. “Look for enchanting pendant necklaces to complete your outfits.”
