The videos for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ “Light the World” initiative have reached more than 69 million views, the Church announced Tuesday.
During the month of December, the LDS Church has encouraged its members and anyone who wants to participate to follow a 25-day advent calendar that invites people to engage in Christlike service. The Church released the videos — one introducing the #LIGHTtheWORLD movement and 25 individual videos to represent the theme for the day — on Nov. 25.
The main video, which was produced in 33 languages, has nearly 35 million views. In addition, the 25 short videos for the daily prompts have nearly 31 million video views.
Participants have shared their experiences on social media using the hashtag #LIGHTtheWORLD. In a blog post, the LDS Church shared a story about an inmate who participated. The inmate’s mother wrote the LDS Church about how she was sharing the daily prompts with her son (the inmate). On Dec. 7, when the prompt was “Jesus Fed the Hungry and So Can You,” the inmate decided to share his candy bar with a new prisoner at his facility. He told his mother that it was the best day he had had in a while, and his mother said sharing the initiative with her son had helped her.
“This ‘Light the World’ project is giving me some happiness and the feeling that I can do something for him and myself that is positive,” she said. … “Being reminded that no matter how little we might think we have, no matter where we are, or what our situation is, we can always serve and give to others, no matter what.”
While the prompts continue through Dec. 25, the #LIGHTtheWORLD initiative ends on Jan. 1, 2017. The remaining day themes include:
- Dec. 21: Jesus Forgave Others And So Can You
- Dec. 22: Jesus Showed Gratitude And So Can You
- Dec. 23: Jesus Was A Peacemaker And You Can Be One Too
- Dec. 24: Jesus Cared For His Loved Ones And So Can You
- Dec. 25: Jesus’s Disciples Followed Him And So Can We
