The SCERA released its list of shows for the 2017 outdoor season: “Hairspray,” “Seussical: The Musical” and “Brigadoon.”
“When choosing shows, we try to hit a good balance – a fun family show, a beloved classic and something more contemporary,” said April Berlin, operations, marketing and development manager for the SCERA. “And because the Shell is such a large venue, we try to pick titles that can be produced on a grander scale or be enhanced by the beautiful outdoor location. I think 2017 hits all those marks.”
The SCERA begins auditions for its summer shows beginning in March. Here is a brief synopsis of each musical as well as audition information to mark on your calendar.
Stepping back into the 1960s, “Hairspray” takes to the streets of Baltimore to follow Tracy Turnblad, an overweight teen who auditions for the popular Corny Collins Show. Tracy fights discrimination against her weight and helps in a movement to get her African American friends more time on the Corny Collins Show.
“‘Hairspray’ is more contemporary, with an upbeat score and production numbers where choreography can really shine,” Berlin said.
The SCERA’s production will open the outdoor season on June 9 and run through June 24. Jan Shelton Hunsaker will direct the show with music direction and choreography by Tiffany Winkel Nutter. Crysta Powell will serve as stage manager.
Auditions for “Hairspray are March 21–22 from 7 p.m.–9 p.m. at the SCERA Center for the Arts.
“Seussical: The Musical”
Straight out of a Dr. Seuss book, “Seussical: The Musical” explores the creativity of Dr. Seuss. From “The Cat in the Hat” to “Horton Hears a Who,” prepare for a whimsical adventure.
“‘Seussical The Musical’ is a family favorite, nostalgic for those who loved Dr. Seuss, and is bright, bold and energetic — we can pretty much guarantee there will be confetti cannons,” Berlin said.
The SCERA’s production will be directed and choreographed by Shawn M. Mortensen with music direction by DeLayne Bluth Dayton. Danielle Berry will serve as stage manager. The show will run July 7–22.
Auditions for the July show are April 17–18 from 7 p.m.–9 p.m. at the SCERA Center for the Arts.
The elusive town of Brigadoon makes a mystical appearance in Orem from Aug. 4–19 at the SCERA. Director Jerry Elison will take Utahns on the adventure with two men vacationing in Scotland when they run across Brigadoon, a city that only appears one day every century.
“‘Brigadoon’ is the classic, and with its setting in the Highlands of Scotland, it is the perfect romantic fantasy for theatre under the stars,” Berlin said. “We may even bring in bagpipes and pipe bands to add to the atmosphere.”
Dana Cardon will direct the music with Julie Bonifay serving as stage manager.
Auditions are May 22–23 from 7 p.m.–9 p.m. at the SCERA Center for the Arts.
