Unlike the majority of cities in the United States, St. George has only two seasons: peak season and non-peak season.
Coincidently, peak season in St. George begins just as autumn leaves begin to appear along the Wasatch Front, which is approximately the first week in October.
For many, the turning of the trees signals an almost instinctual response to flock to the warm-weathered city for the winter. For others the instinct is a bit weaker, causing only feelings for a vacation.
Whichever category you fit into — this guide will provide you with all the right places to stay, eat and, of course, golf.
While it is true that most Utah County residents flock to St. George in the winter, off-season can also be a good time to visit.

The main reason? Cost and availability.
“The summer is a great time to visit because of cost. Golfing and hotel rooms are much cheaper during the summer months,” says Roxie Sherwin, St. George Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “The way you beat the heat is to golf first thing in the morning when temperatures are still down in the 60s and 70s. Then during the heat of the day vacationers can eat in air-conditioned restaurants, then tour or play golf again in the evening.”
Sherwin says vacationers stay in St. George hotel rooms and do their sight-seeing in Washington County. “Zion is a great place to visit during the summer months because it’s so high there it stays relatively cool. However, it can sometimes be difficult to get lodging in the summer. The good news is that’s St. George’s slower season,” Sherwin says. Springdale is also a good alternative place for people to visit during the hotter months.
For those looking to do a little more than bask in the sun, St. George offers something for competitors.
The Huntsman World Senior Games and the St. George Marathon both take place in the fall.
If you’re over 50, you qualify for the Huntsman Senior Games, an international event attracting 40,000 participants annually.
While the Games themselves give many a chance to compete, some say the many socials, health screenings and other party-activities are enough reason to attend the fall event.
