Eating Out: Your guide to Utah Valley’s best places

A little bit of Italy on Center Street Have you ever had a real Italian soda? Icy fruit flavored soda water topped with an inch of whipped cream that swirls gently into creamy clouds with each sip? Have you ever tried sipping that erstwhile soda while noshing on a crisp-crusted pizza topped with fresh basil and mozzarella? Mama mia! Buona Vita, the “Ristorante Italiano” has arrived on Provo’s Center Street. Their lunch specials are from 11:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and are all you care to eat pasta, salad, and pizza for just $7.95. Sandwich specials start at $5.49. But these aren’t any ordinary offerings. Take the pasta for example: the vegetable spaghetti is crowned with zucchini, carrots, eggplant, dusky Italian olives, in a fresh tomato sauce splashed with fruity olive oil; the alfredo fettuccini is made with four cheeses; and the gnocchi ai funghi is an aerial potato dumpling with mushrooms in a light cream and tomato sauce. Owner Alan Galeano’s father is Italian, and years spent in Italy learning about cooking paid off. He opened the first Buono Vita in Hermosa Beach in 1990, a space that had formerly been a tiny fast food restaurant with only seven tables and a counter for 10. Mr. Galeano showed customers to their seats, dashed into the kitchen to cook the food, waited tables, and then washed the dishes. From that inauspicious beginning came another Buona Vita in Los Angeles and two more restaurants in Mexico. With partner, Todd Davis, Alan opened the Provo Buono Vita last year and launched two Park City restaurants as well. If you aren’t sidetracked by the splendid lunches, Buona Vita serves dinner as well, Monday through Thursday from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 5 p.m. until 11:30 p.m. With a banquet room for parties and catering available, Buona Vita promises great food at affordable prices.
