Las Tarascas serves grandmother’s old world recipes

Hold on to your sombreros — Mechoacan Mexican cuisine has arrived in Provo.
The owner of Las Tarascas, Alfonso Lopez, proudly displays his slogan “110% Authentic Mexican Cuisine” and uses his grandmother’s old world recipes. He proudly lists her name, Dona Roque, at each spot on the menu that her original recipes are being served up for his guests.
His small but inviting restaurant on University Parkway near Albertson’s in Provo is colorfully decorated with Mexican chairs, wall hangings and table cloths. It was immediately evident who the owner was as he moved from table to table checking on everyone’s needs, running the cash register and helping with the plates.
My daughter and I arrived at lunch hour, so it was quite busy, and they could have used a couple extra hands with serving and grilling. I ordered the “Al Pastor,” a sweet pork cooked in the house marinade and grilled with chunks of pineapple, cilantro, onion and fresh mango salsa. A little more mango salsa, please. Yummm!
My daughter ordered a “Chicken Quesadilla” served with salsa and beans. It seemed a little small for the price, but tasty.
My son Ryan thinks himself a Mexican cuisine aficionado so I ordered a carry-out “Made-From Scratch Tamale” and “Chile Verde Burrito with Dona’s Tomatillo Sauce” for him.  With one bite of the burrito he exclaimed, “Now that’s a burrito with a kick!”
I have to admit, I’m not the best judge of Mexican as most of my tastes run to calmer waters, but it was great fun to see and hear returned missionaries scrambling for seats to taste the authentic food they remembered and to speak to the waitresses in their once-fluent Spanish. If Taco Bell is your idea of great Mexican, then this place may not be for you.
But if you’d like to speak the Spanish with Alfonso, he’d love to share his grandmother’s stories, food and love with you. Good luck to you, Alfonso!
Until next time, remember to fill your life with scrumptious food and joy! UV
