New looks for 2011 include throwbacks to the 1940s and 1970s.
“Both men and women are going for ‘40s hairstyles,” says Danine Imboden, the creative director and assistant manager for Remedez. “And the ‘40s look works on any age group.”
Remedez is a five-year winner of Salon 200, which recognizes the nation’s fastest-growing salons. Remedez is also a seven-time Best of State winner, which means that your “look” is in good hands with this 8-year-old salon in University Mall.
Women are wearing updos in the daytime — twisting the hair up in a casual, “not fussy” way. Side braids and wavy hair are making a comeback. Popular styles include more curling and styling. The “pixie” look is also big right now — in platinum blonde or black.
What’s out? The “flat iron” look and foils.
“I would be OK if I never saw another flat iron hairdo,” Danine says. “Unless you have a lot of volume in your hair, the flat-iron hair makes you look tired.”
What’s in? Shine.
“The grungy matte look is gone, and shine is a big draw right now,” Danine says. “Color melting is also a great way to get highlighted color without looking highlighted.”
But even with all these trends and tips, it’s important to not feel trapped by rules.
“Just because you are 45 doesn’t mean you have to cut your hair off,” Danine says. “There are no rules — just find what works for you and what you can handle on a day-to-day basis.”
A professional can help you make these decisions, but find someone who is well-versed in face shapes and is willing to teach you how to look great every day.
“There are looks out there for everyone right now,” Danine says. “There’s no ‘must have’ look out there right now that truly only 10 percent of the population can pull off.”
New You Tip: Everyone needs three things when it comes to hair — great products, great tools and a great hairdresser. But you also need good ideas. Look at movies and magazines for looks that inspire you, but remember to focus on hair styles that work for your age group.
