Toddler run over in tragic accident

PROVO — A father renovating his house accidentally ran over his 18-month old daughter Thursday night. The child died at the scene.

According to Lt. Mathew Sifuanua, the distraught father called Provo dispatch at 8:17 p.m. reporting the accident.

The father was renovating the house and hooked up a trailer to the family SUV, which he loaded with rocks, concrete and debris.

When the father got into the SUV and moved the car forward, he felt a bump. Only after he had parked the vehicle and gone back did he learn that his daughter had been run over by the car.

The father believed the toddler was with the mother and vice versa; the mother was in the backyard looking for the toddler at the time of the accident.

The police department responded to the scene and confirmed the daughter had died, but family members knew the accident was fatal when they called dispatch.

“It is a very, very sad deal for the family and our hearts and prayers go out to them,” Siufanua said.

The traffic investigation team came to investigate the scene after the accident.

“At the conclusion of the investigation, everything so far is pointing to a very tragic accident,” Siufanua said.
