Mormon Games AppIf “Angry Birds” isn’t your idea of uplifting Sunday entertainment, a new, free app from three BYU graduates might be just what you’re looking for. “Mormon Games” is an uplifting, educational game for members of the LDS Church that is as entertaining as it is enlightening.

“Our goal was to create a game that was entertaining, intellectually challenging, and spiritually uplifting,” said Weston Kunz, one of the game’s creators.

Kunz and two of his classmates, Monte McAllister and Ryan Olaveson, created Mormon Games during the 2012-2013 school year. The app brought in more than 1,400 downloads in its first two weeks.

“Mormon Games” features two games: “Scripture Golf,” in which the player identifies the book, chapter and verse when presented with a random chapter heading or verse from the Book of Mormon, and “Know-It-All,” in which players answer Book of Mormon trivia questions.

Questions in “Know-It-All” are divided into three levels — primary, seminary and scriptorian — and all answers reference the Book of Mormon.

“The correct answer to every question has an associated verse of scripture or reference from lds.org,” Olaveson said. “We wanted to make questions not only trivial, but a starting point for learning new things in the Book of Mormon.”

Part of that learning involves sharing what you already know. Players are encouraged to use the app’s associated website to submit their own questions for inclusion in future versions of the game.

“Mormon Games” is available in the App Store and is compatible with iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. But even if you aren’t an Apple person, you can play both versions of the game online at mormongame.com.

Breanna Olaveson is married to Ryan Olaveson, one of the creators of “Mormon Games.”
