December is known as the season for giving. Here are just three of the many ways to serve this holiday season. For more ideas, visit the United Way of Utah County’s website at unitedwayuc.org.

1. Sub for Santa

The United Way’s Sub for Santa program provides gifts for children between 18 months and 14 years of age in Utah County. Families can sponsor a family, make an online contribution that will be used to purchase gifts, or sign up to deliver already-purchased gifts to their recipients.

2. Food & Care Coalition

This Provo-based nonprofit organization serves hot meals to those in need and provides assistance to underprivileged single adults. (Families in need of care are referred to Community Action Services.) Although signs-ups for holiday-meal serving are full, director of volunteers Treva Vaile said there are still opportunities to provide musical entertainment and help with the dessert bar. The organization also needs gift cards to stores such as Walmart, Costco and Sam’s Club and select items for their Christmas bags. Email trevavc@foodandcare.org if you would like to volunteer.

3. Community Action Services and Food Bank

Food, volunteers and money are always in demand at this Provo-based nonprofit, said Craig Severinsen, communications director. On-site volunteers are most needed during the day, but in the evenings families can sign up to participate in a service project such as sorting food or assembling hygiene kits. (Sign up as soon as possible if you’d like to volunteer during the holidays.) Families can also organize food drives by printing up flyers to distribute to neighbors and then collecting food and nonperishable items to deliver to the food bank.
