President Cecil O. Samuelson has served as BYU’s president for nearly 11 years.

PROVO — BYU students stood applauding President Cecil O. Samuelson after he was released from being BYU president after 11 years of service.

LDS Church Counselor President Henry B. Eyring attended Tuesday’s devotional and released Samuelson from his position as of May 1, 2014.

“President and Sister Samuelson, we love you and appreciate all that you have done,” President Eyring said.

Kevin J. Worthen, former dean of the J. Reuben Clark Law School and the current advancement vice president at BYU, has been assigned as the new BYU president.

Samuelson has served as BYU’s 12th president since May 2003.
