Here comes Santa Claus, holiday lights and a crazy shopping season to the Shops at Riverwoods.

On Friday, Nov. 21, the Shops at Riverwoods is officially starting the holiday season with their annual Lighting of Riverwoods event.

“It’s a kick off to the holiday season,” said Lawrence Packer, mall operations manager. “We do it the week before Black Friday, so it doesn’t interfere with shopping.”

At 6:30 p.m. the Shops will flip the switch, lighting the outdoor mall with between 2-3 million lights on trees, shrubs and buildings. Then, to brighten the evening a little more, local band The Strike will perform in the Gazebo. Outside of the opening ceremony, there will be free carriage rides, face painting and giveaways.

Plus, Santa Claus will make his first appearance of the season. Santa’s home will be in the main corridor of the Shops at Riverwoods and is available to meet with Christmas wish makers Monday through Saturday until Christmas. There will be no photographer, but parents can take pictures of their children with Santa for free.

For the Lighting of Riverwoods event, the Shops at Riverwoods is teaming up with United Way to collect items and raise money for locals in need this holiday season.

“It’s just a way that we like to give back to the community,” Packer said. “We are going to be benefiting United Way, so people can bring contributions of children’s books, short novels, young adult books or kids clothes.”

In order to keep warm and make a small contribution to United Way, three different fire pits will be set up around the Shops at Riverwoods where people can donate money and receive s’more supplies to roast over the fire.
