OREM — University Mall is almost a place of the past. On Thursday, Orem officials and University Mall representatives held a groundbreaking for University Place.
University Place is the new name given to University Mall for after the expansion is complete. The approved additions include 600,000 square feet of office space, 1,100 housing units, 1.3 million square feet of retail, a two-acre civic plaza and park, a swim and tennis club, an outdoor music venue, 400 residential units and a hotel.
“University Mall has been the retail center of Orem and Utah Valley for the past 45 years, but University Mall is now changing into University Place,” said Orem Mayor Richard Brunst. “I want to applaud the Woodbury Corporation and Woodbury family for their efforts in turning this into a new facility. A mixed use facility. Actually, a facility that will be a gathering place for the citizens of Orem and for many people throughout Utah Valley.”
Mayor Brunst noted that University Place will bring $500 million of new investment into the “heart of Orem.”
Woodbury Corporation, who has backed University Mall from the beginning, is excited for people to have the chance to live, shop, work, dine and play all within University Place’s complex.
“It’s tw0 and half years ago that we began creating a new master plan for University Mall, now known as University Place, a master plan that leverages the strength of University Mall with the economic hub of this county for the last 40 plus years,” said Randy Woodbury, Woodbury Corporation president.
The groundbreaking was held outside of the five-story business complex that will house NorthStar Alarm on the top floor. The other office spaces are not yet filled.
“One might argue that (the business complex) is the most important component of the project,” Woodbury said. “This brings and keeps Orem jobs in Orem and provides a good lifestyle and the ability for people to earn a good living and to spend their earnings within the community.”
Construction has already began on many areas of the new University Place design including RC Willey’s expansion, the 5-story business complex and a pad for a three-tenant building that will house Chipotle, Potbelly Sandwich Shop and a Starbucks with a drive-through.
