ImprovBroadway knows how to tickle the funny bone, which is how they claimed the No. 1 spot for Best Stage Performance. Rebranding the Thrillionaires, Director and Owner Zach Atherton founded ImprovBroadway in 2014. Now the cast of 45 performs every Saturday night at Brigham Larson Pianos in Orem.

But you don’t need to be a performer to be funny, according to Zach. Whether you are on the stage or in a private conversation, these four tips from Zach will make you funnier without even trying — seriously, that’s one of his points.

1. Don’t be afraid to call out the weird things.

“Our basic foundation is that truth is comedy.”

2. Don’t try to be funny.

“It comes off insincere. You are funny just being yourself.”

3. Leave your ego at the door.

“When everyone looks silly, no one is silly. We’ve adopted something that Amy Poehler said: ‘No one looks stupid when we’re having fun.’ If you don’t worry about looking stupid, you’re naturally going to have more fun.”

4. Don’t take yourself too seriously.

“At the end of the day, we are just a bunch of grown ups doing make-believe in front of an audience.”
