Casting call An auto accident in 2002 left Katie with a broken back and paralysis from the hips down. But Katie didn’t let her disability stop her. The mother of two has climbed Machu Pichu, competed in hand cycling marathons, including qualifying for the Boston Marathon, and enjoys skiing (both on snow slopes and on the water).
Behind-the-scenes Katie’s greatest joy comes from service. Doctors often have patients with disabilities call her for advice. She also enjoys public speaking, especially to youth. “We all have a disability whether it’s physical, social, spiritual or mental. We have to figure out the ability within the disability.”
The show must go on “People have asked me if I would take back what happened to me, and as much as I want to say yes, I couldn’t have learned all that I have without such a hard experience. I had a great life before and I have a great life now.”
Costume change When Katie isn’t serving through public speaking and advice, she dons a hard hat to help out with the Heart 2 Home organization.
No place like home “Sundance is my number one. We camp a lot so we’re in the canyons all the time and I love being up in that area for skiing. I love Utah Lake for boating memories.”
