Maybe you’ve experienced a blood clot with leg swelling. Maybe varicose veins appeared after a second pregnancy. Maybe they’ve been there since your early 20s. Or maybe you’ve never even seen them, but you’ve felt symptoms associated with varicose veins — heaviness, achiness, swelling, cramping, restless legs and pelvic pain.
Maybe you don’t even have varicose veins, but you know someone who does. So here’s the bad news and good news.
The bad news? Problem veins are unpleasant, unsightly and unhealthy.
The good news? Treating unhealthy veins is more effective and easier than ever.
Know the Symptoms
Some varicose veins (and other diseased veins) are easy to spot. The rope-like purple twisted vein rises to the surface of the skin — easy to see. However, it’s not just the big varicose veins that can — or often need to — be treated. What you see is often the “tip of the iceberg” and reflects a deeper, less visible, but more serious problem. Here are some symptoms of venous disease:
• Heavy legs • Tired legs
• Restless legs • Achy legs
• Leg pain • Itchy legs
• Leg Swelling • Skin discoloration
• Leg Cramping • Skin ulceration
• Bulging veins • Pelvic pain

How to Choose a Vein Doctor
For any medical procedure, the doctor and practice you choose is an important decision. There are many important considerations, such as physician qualifications, training and experience, in addition to facility accreditation and staff competence.
Do you feel comfortable with the doctor and the facility?
You should feel comfortable with your provider. Do you like and trust your doctor and staff? Is the facility accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency, such as the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) or the American College of Radiology (ACR)? Are the sonographers registered vascular technologists? Accreditation helps ensure the highest standards for personnel training, equipment and ongoing professional development.
Does the doctor specialize in comprehensive vascular treatment?
You want to work with a team that has specific education and experience in the comprehensive treatment of all aspects of vein disease — ranging from relatively minor problems to more complex issues such as blood clots and vein obstruction. This level of experience and training means they can diagnose and treat more capably than less experienced providers.
Is the doctor board-certified?
Trust your legs to an expert. “Board-certified” means that after your doctor graduated from medical school, he/she went through many years of additional rigorous training in vascular diseases and minimally invasive imaging-guided surgical techniques. Interventional Radiologists are among the leaders in the diagnosis and treatment of all aspects of vein disease.
Treatment Options
Venous disease affects everyone differently. That’s why IVC® physicians take the time to get to know you and your veins so you receive the right diagnosis and the right treatment. The initial detailed consultation consists of learning about you, your symptoms and any other related medical conditions. As part of the evaluation, the patient undergoes a detailed ultrasound of the legs, performed by a specially trained and registered sonographer.
The advanced technology used by the IVC® doctors and staff map the unique pattern of veins in each person, so they can better understand the condition. Ultrasound uses painless sound waves to generate high-resolution images, which allow the physician to measure the speed and direction of blood flow and the dimensions and course of normal and abnormal veins.
After the initial examination, a customized treatment plan is determined.
Although each patient’s treatment plan is a little different, most procedures can be done in the IVC® office and most patients are back to routine, daily activity within hours — with almost no downtime.
