James and Hilma Grinsell hadn’t had great experiences with the dentist throughout their lives.

“We both had a lot of anxiety about dentists from past experiences,” Hilma says. “We never thought we would find someone to meet our needs and help us be calm.”

Then, the couple started going to Dr. Blake Matthews at Matthews Smiles in Provo.

“When we first met Blake and his staff, we knew it was totally going to be a great match for us,” she says. “Everyone is professional and knowledgeable and very kind and caring, quickly welcoming us into their family.”

Patients have been feeling this comfort and connection since Dr. Matthews’ earliest days of practicing dentistry. It comes from Dr. Matthews’ friendliness and the client service principles he learned from his father, who started the practice nearly 50 years ago. After working with his father for decades, Dr. Matthews now carries the Matthews Smiles banner by himself and does so with a desire to build on the family legacy.

“Not many practices have that longevity. Our focus on patient comfort and quality dental care has provided us the opportunity to establish relationships and friendships with our patients for generations,” Dr. Matthews says.

Comfortable patients like the Grinsells aren’t created by accident. Dr. Matthews and his staff work to complete dental work in a comfortable environment — complete with neck rests, warm blankets and iPads — while leaning back and enjoying in-ceiling televisions.

Free nitrous oxide is available to all patients, even for routine cleanings. For those suffering from treatment anxiety, Matthews Smiles offers full sedation dentistry.

“Our No. 1 goal is patient comfort,” Dr. Matthews says.

When patients are settled in and comfortable, Dr. Matthews and his team of professionals offer conservative, top-level dentistry where the patient is involved in dental treatment decisions.

Also a master in his craft, Dr. Matthews is an instructor and educator in the fields of cosmetic and implant dentistry. He also offers the latest in sleep apnea treatment, periodontal therapy, crowns, veneers and clear braces.

And they do all of it with a smile any dentist would be proud of.

Medical Tip: Dr. Blake Matthews has been an instructor for cosmetic institutes where he teaches fellow dentists the latest techniques for cosmetic and implant dentistry. “Implants have saved dentistry,” Dr. Matthews says. “The implant offers a long-term solution for patients and integrates well with other teeth.” Implants are placed in the bone of the patient and then given time to integrate completely with the tissue and bone. When the implant is set, a restorative crown is placed on top. Implants alleviate the need for uncomfortable and less-effective dentures.
