40 Under 40: McKenzie King Bauer

Company: Thread Wallets
Title: CMO + Co-Founder
Age: 27
City: Provo

CAREER ANTHEM “Running Down a Dream” by Tom Petty

LINER NOTES McKenzie Bauer’s got some serious street thread. She founded Thread Wallets in 2015 with her husband, Colby. After raising $35k on Kickstarter, the company put its money where its wallets were and worked hard to bring in the (neatly organized) cash. Four years and fast-growing revenue later, Thread Wallets has won accolades at the Sego Awards  and BusinessQ’s own UV50 in the Startups to Watch category. (Update: We’re still happily watching.)

FAVORITE LYRIC “On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair.” — “Hotel California” by the Eagles (“Anyone can finish those lyrics!”)

CAREER HIGH NOTE “I received a Sego Award as a female founder for being one of the fastest-growing companies in Utah under five years.”

MUSIC TO MY EARS “Don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s ending.”

PITCHY ADVICE “I hate it when people say, ‘Find something you’re passionate about and do that!’ If you’re searching to build something off of a ‘passion’ you may spend your whole life looking for greener pastures. Find something that interests you and ways to incorporate your existing passions.”

MY FORTE “I am determined and sure of myself. That sounds terribly cocky, but it’s just who I am. If I have made up my mind or set a goal, I do all I can to achieve it.”

DREAM RECORD “Building a business that can give complete financial stability to each member of our executive team. I want all our employees to have gained experiences, connections and skills that will push them forward in their future endeavors.”
