One of the most important things men can do to update their church look is make sure they are wearing the correct size and cut. Gone are the days where men pick a size that is one to two sizes too big — just to be comfortable. It shouldn’t be skintight either. Focus on the shoulders and the chest. Make sure they feel comfortable — but not comfortable enough to play basketball in. Depending on body type, the sides of the suit should have a gradual taper around the torso. Slacks should fit snugly around the natural waist and have a gradual taper to the shoe. Depending on desired “slimness” and overall look, the length of the trousers will vary. When in doubt, trends have them slightly shorter than longer. A professional tailor can tell you if your suit is able to be altered to fit, or if you need to start with something new.
An inexpensive way to update your church look is to change out old ties. There are skinny ties and regular-width ties. However, even the regular-width ties are narrower now than in the past. A good rule of thumb is that if the tie is older than 10 years, it is probably out of style. But don’t worry — if you hold on to things long enough, they seem to come back around. Colors and patterns of ties are always a personal preference, but adding a splash of color to a mid- to dark color suit will make a big difference.
Lastly, buy a new white shirt. We hang on to old ones for too long. Make sure it has a nice taper around the torso and looks clean and pressed.
