Cameron Treu is always comin’ in hot. He’s had a job since he was 14 years old, and after his LDS mission he gravitated toward all things sales: cars, hot tubs, pool tables, RVs, alarm systems, you name it. After nine years, he and his best friend Andrew opened C&D Marketing, where they took their door-knocking skills and built teams to generate leads for local insurance agencies. But when Treu saw BBQ on TV, everything changed. He sold his half of the marketing company and dove in tongs first. In his first three years of cooking, he did everything from sell BBQ, design BBQ, cook BBQ, teach people how to cook BBQ, compete professionally in BBQ, become a Grand Champion in BBQ, move to Austin, Texas to learn from the king of BBQ John Lewis, to finally come back to Utah in 2013 to open Bam Bams BBQ. And today? His shop in Orem has become a local legend. In 2019, Treu spiced up his career with the Nitty Gritty Podcast. He and co-host Andrew Van Buren interview cool entrepreneurs and fun personalities about the nitty gritty details of what makes them tick. They’ve hosted 122 episodes so far, and the episodes are peppered with humor and heart. Treu story.

WORD.

Be grateful, be kind, and love EVERYONE. I fail at these a lot, but I always do my best. Also, if you drive slow, GET OUT OF THE LEFT LANE.

COOLEST WORD IN THE WORLD

Rotary Girder.

WORST WORD IN THE WORLD

Menstruation.

COOLEST WORK ACCOMPLISHMENT

There are two things that are always the highlight of my year:

1. Cooking for the New Orleans Saints for the past four years (thank you, Taysom). 2. Spending the entire week in Augusta, Georgia, during The Masters. I spend 2-3 days watching The Masters and 3-4 days cooking BBQ. Thank you, Blake and Nate!

COOLEST LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENT

Being a guy with ADHD, so many things I have done are considered accomplishments to me. But my greatest accomplishment is the hardest yet most wonderful and rewarding thing in my life: my marriage to Ashley Treu. She deserves a freaking medal!

COOLEST BOOK

“The Third Door” by Alex Banayan.

COOLEST SONG

“Ain’t Goin Down (til the Sun Comes Up)” by Garth Brooks.

COOLEST PODCAST

One that’s not the “Nitty Gritty Podcast”? Then I’ll say “Conan Needs a Friend” and “Revisionist History.”

COOLEST CLOTHING

My signed New Orleans Saints jerseys.

COOLEST PART OF YOUR COMPANY

We don’t change our product in response to meat prices — which is a tough thing to do. We stay true to our craft and to our hand-picked meat suppliers.

COOLEST THING ABOUT YOUR EMPLOYEES

Loyalty. I’ve got a small group who have been with me almost since the beginning. Bryce Melton, Annie Tuimauluga and Marcus Groesbeck. They are my family. I would do anything for them.

COOLEST THING ABOUT UTAH VALLEY

Easy. BYU sports! And the view.

COOLEST THING ABOUT OUR

BUSINESS COMMUNITY

It’s gotta be the entrepreneurs. This place must have something in the water. People here know how to create and how to grind! It’s so exciting to be a part of.

COOLEST ENTREPRENEUR YOU KNOW

First, is The Godfather herself, Susan Petersen of Freshly Picked. From selling glow sticks outside of Stadium of Fire to recycling windows to building her Freshly Picked empire (not to mention her great sneaker game!), no one — and I mean no one — has given more of her time and knowledge to local entrepreneurs than Susan has. The second is from my industry and that’s Jayson Edwards, founder of J Dawgs. People don’t realize how freaking smart J is. Who else could build what he has with hot dogs and chips?! He rode a city bus with lumber and tools to build his first shack for hells sake! What a story.
