Just keep swimming. Michelle Shumway dove right into entrepreneurship when she opened Rad Swim in 2014. Shumway was a mom of four girls who never had any plans for owning her own business, but after a heartbreaking loss, she felt grounded and guided to build her company. It’s now been more than seven years, and Shumway and her team handle everything from swimsuit design to marketing to sales. Rad Swim has 118k followers on Instagram, and the brand is buoyant. Back on land, Shumway and her family have another business: The Shumway Show. Their YouTube channel shares the adventures of their family of six, posts fun and crazy challenges, and has 343k subscribers and millions of views.

WORD.

Keep moving forward. Even if you are just making baby steps toward your goals, consistency and grit are so important.

COOLEST WORD IN THE WORLD

Is this a trick question? Rad, of course!

WORST WORD IN THE WORLD

Hate. I don’t like to think it, let alone say it. You can find good in anything — or at least learn from it.

COOLEST WORK ACCOMPLISHMENT

Opening our flagship store in Highland. But honestly the very coolest is whenever we meet someone who expresses sincere gratitude for what we do. It reminds me of my “why” and motivates me every time.

COOLEST LIFE ACCOMPLISHMENT

Marrying my rad husband almost 19 years ago, having four awesome daughters, and just being happy and content with this phase of life.

COOLEST BOOK

The scriptures are hands down the coolest books, which is why I read them daily.

COOLEST SONG

“I Know My Heavenly Father Loves Me” because it literally saved my husband’s life after a plane crash.

COOLEST PODCAST

“Cultivate A Good Life.”

COOLEST CLOTHING

An old T-shirt from a family reunion in 2014 that I spray painted the word “RAD” on. It was the very beginning of the company and kind-of solidified our company name.

COOLEST PART OF YOUR COMPANY

It was a tender mercy at a time of hardship. I began building the company while on pregnancy bedrest with our fifth baby. Before he was born, I had designed our first three swimsuits and had about a thousand of them ready to sell. He was born at 25 weeks gestation and only lived for about 12 hours after an emergency c-section. Continuing to build Rad Swim helped me through a very difficult loss, and I felt very guided. I love what Rad Swim continues to teach me, and also that it’s a family-run business. I love working with my husband, Khyl, who helps with everything! He is our head graphic designer, was our only photographer for the first few years (and continues to take many of our pictures), and picks up pieces wherever he is needed. He is the coolest. It’s also cool that our daughters now help us with marketing and with designing our prints.

COOLEST THING ABOUT YOUR EMPLOYEES

They are as much friends as they are employees. I love all of them and feel grateful I get to learn from them.

COOLEST THING ABOUT UTAH VALLEY

It is home to me! My family moved to Alpine when I was 10 years old, and I never want to leave. I love the kind people and commonly shared values. I could never have imagined that one day we’d have a store in Highland, and I’m so grateful for the support of the community.

COOLEST ENTREPRENEUR YOU KNOW

I love this question. My Dad is the coolest entrepreneur I know. He is not here anymore, but he left a legacy. He started an aftermarket auto parts company called Interstate Auto Supply when I was about 6 years old. I watched his passion and excitement for what he was building and was so proud of him for his success. I often wonder how involved he’s been in helping me from the other side. I like to believe he would think Rad Swim is super cool.
